Test Room Read

Room Read hears the music in the room and says the dance in your ear. Joining the test takes about 5 minutes: three steps.

1Join the testers' group to get your invitation

Tap Join group. If it asks you to sign in, use the Google account your phone's Play Store uses: there's a short video of that further down this page.

The group is just the guest list for the test: members can't see each other, and it never sends emails.

2Accept the invitation

Tap Become a tester.

3Install Room Read

Tap Install. If Google Play says “Item not found.”, that's normal straight after joining: wait about 15 minutes, then come back to this page and tap the Step 3 button again.

Then start listening

1. Open Room Read and allow the microphone and notifications.
2. Put your earpiece in, tap Start listening and put the phone in your pocket.

It announces the dance of each new song. To stop, tap Stop, or swipe the app away.

This 40-second video shows the sign-in part of Step 1. When you have joined the group, carry on from Step 2.

Problems and questions

• Will it work on my phone? It needs an Android phone (not an iPhone) with Android 8.0 or newer. Most phones from the last few years are fine.
• Google says "Sign in" or "You don't have permission". You're not signed in yet. Sign in with the Google account your phone's Play Store uses (in Play Store, tap your profile picture to see which). The group has no messages, so its Conversations page always says you don't have permission: use the Join group button on its About page. Easiest of all: open this page on your phone, in Chrome signed into that account.
• "Item not found" or "App not available". Check, in order: (1) you tapped Become a tester in step 2, as joining the group alone isn't enough; (2) your phone's Play Store is signed into the same Google account (tap your profile picture in Play Store; switch account there if needed); (3) you opened Room Read with the button in step 3, as searching the Play Store won't find a test app; (4) it has been about 15 minutes: Google usually lets new testers in within 5 to 15 minutes, occasionally up to an hour; (5) your phone has Android 8.0 or newer and is 64-bit, as Play won't offer it on older phones. • A link opens in another browser or account. Copy the link and paste it into Chrome, signed into the right account.
• Play calls it "com.pascoeharvey.roomread (unreviewed)". That's Room Read: apps in testing sometimes show this name.
• Can I change how it calls? In the settings you can choose how sure the dance model has to be, or switch the model off.
• How big is it? About 810 MB to download, because the library of dance recordings comes with the app, and about 2.5 GB free to install or update. After that it works offline.

Room Read has no account, no adverts, no analytics and no internet permission. Nothing it hears is recorded or sent anywhere.
